Why It’s Time to Change Your Career & Do Something You Love
Written by: Tracey Clayton
When you wake up in the morning, what’s the first thing that crosses your mind? Is it something along the lines of “I wish I didn’t have to go to work”? This happens to all of us. Maybe we’re feeling under the weather, or maybe we’re just having a bad day. We won’t always be excited to do our job, and that’s fine.
However, if you can’t remember when was the last time you felt happy about going to work and getting things done, that’s an issue.
We spend at least the third of our day at work, so it’s important to do something that we actually enjoy. If our job starts feeling like a personal form of hell, there’s no way it won’t reflect on all the other aspects of our lives, making us tired and miserable even when we’re back home.
If you’re struggling with this, but feel like a career change is too big of a step, don’t worry – we’re here to help!
Decide What You Want to Do
Sometimes we know exactly what we want to do, but sometimes it’s a little trickier. If you’ve been tired and sad for a long time, your main thought might pretty much be “anything but this.” But to make a real change you have to find some hidden strength within yourself, you need to find inspiration.
Look back on your childhood, what did you dream about being? Think about things you’re good at or things you want to be good at. The thing you need more than anything is willpower, and if you have that? Baby, you’ll make it for sure. Allow yourself to dream and focus on your own style, your desires, things that make you happy. Somewhere in there lies the perfect career for you.
Change Your Perspective
Want to know the number one obstacle to changing your career? Negativity.
You can have all the education of this world, all the skills and all the opportunities and yet it will count for nothing if you don’t believe in yourself.
This doesn’t mean that all you need in life is a good attitude, and it doesn’t mean your problems are irrelevant.
You will need to work hard, have good support and some luck, but your attitude will be the thing that ties all of these together, it will be the thing that pushes you to succeed.
To make a change, you first need to believe a change is possible and then be strong enough to push past the problems and get up even when you stumble.
Once you’ve picked what you want to do, it’s time to start making plans. Some people have a college degree that they never got to use to its full potential, but a lot of them didn’t go to college at all. If you dream about getting a better education you should know that it’s absolutely possible, especially with the development of new technologies. From night schools to on-line classrooms, the world is full of various courses, tutoring programs and universities that you can attend.
Keep in mind that preparing for university admissions is a tough journey on its own, so consider consulting professional tutors that can help you with that. To get your education the key thing you’ll need will be good organizational skills, especially if you need to juggle your classes and go to work at the same time. Not many of us can just quit our job and go pursue our dreams with ease, but that doesn’t mean they are out of reach. You’ll just need to get stubborn and remember that you’re working for your future.
Make Short Term Goals
Set up small goals that will push you along your journey. Instead of “I’ll finish college” start with “I’ll attend every single class I can this week.” Take small steps, because they’ll remind you that this is a process and make everything feel more manageable.
It’s good to have something tangible in your sights, something that you can get excited about. Remember to reward yourself occasionally when you make progress and make sure to surround yourself with kind friends and family who can offer support and help you up if you stumble.
Everyone deserves a shot at happiness, and if your job is making you miserable, or even if it just does nothing to inspire you, it’s time to change it. Work hard and remember your dreams. The effort will pay off.
